MAX was the place to learn about Studio 8 from the expert team that created it. It was also the place to hear about the newly released Flex 2 and to learn about the rich internet applications that are being built with the Flash Platform. From this year's release of the powerful ColdFusion MX 7 to the latest release of the Flash Player, MAX attendees saw the latest and greatest that Macromedia has to offer.
Make the video you have always wanted to make in one weekend. The Fly By Night Video Challenge is a weekend of mayhem and magic.
Fly By Night is a different kind of competition that encourages creativity, absurdity and spontaneity. The theme of the competition is announced on Friday night and the race begins. Participants then spend the next 48 hours creating their own films. Entries are screened on the Sunday after submission.
Ten films selected by the judges receive S$300 in prize money each. The judges’ decision is based on the creators’ ability to make the most interesting work with limited time and money. The Judges’ Choice will be announced ‘live’ on the Sunday night itself.
Past entries have gone on to be screened at the Thai Short Film Festival, Minikino (Indonesia), Pusan Asian Short Film Festival and 3rd Frame Film Festival. Fly By Night alumnae include filmmakers Yee Chang Kang, Ellery Ngiam, Tania Sng and Victric Thng.
This is the first year I am participating in the Video Challenge. My team members include Daniel, Muru, Hassan, Siva. Daniel and Muru both participated in the video challenge in the first year (2003) and got into the top 8. So this will be their 2nd time participating.
The title this year was really weird. It was ' ^#&$*)' Yeah thats what it is. Maybe I'll tell you what we did for the video, after the results are announced, but it was truly exciting coming up with ideas, shooting, and editing in less than 48 hours. Nothing like I have done before. The motivation for me this year, is not really the top 10 prize, but rather the viewers choice prize, which is an AVID editing system.
Oh yes, PANASONIC and AVID are the official tech sponsors, so we got some freebies from AVID, like a beautiful note pad, a phone lanyard, and a black T-shirt with AVID and PANASONIC printed at the back, with of course the FLY BY NIGHT logo. We finished our editing at about 2 am today morning, and the submission is from 11am to 1pm. Screening starts from 3..and will probably last until say 9, because this year, there are supposedly 50 over entries. Hope we win something, but even if we don't it will be fun to watch all the screenings, and it was truly an enriching experience just participating in the challenge. It enabled me to understand the FCP system better, for one thing. Thanks to all those who have helped in making our video possible. Thanks Norman for you Camera, and Daniel, you were an excellent sport.(the content below is not from the book)
There are a number of reasons that people lie. The first is fear. This is the most common reason that people may lie, and they are taking shelter from a perceived punishment. It may be because they know they have done something wrong a single time, in which case it is not compulsive lying. But if they are always in fear of being punished, it may become a habit, which is a second reason for lying. In this case, it may become compulsive lying, which is lying by reflex. Even when confronted by the truth, they insist the lie is the truth in this case. A third case is learning to lie through modeling. When a people see others lie, especially when they get away with it, they may become more prone to lying. Finally, people lie because they feel if they tell the truth they won't get what they want. Thus, out of the main reasons for lying, only lying by habit can truly be called "compulsive lying."
Increased lying has been seen with a number of psychiatric diagnoses such as ADHD and Bipolar Disorder. With ADHD people will often say "I don't know why I did that", and when confronted about why they lied, their answer will be the same. ADHD children also display impulsivity, and they may lie implusively. Bipolar Disorder can be associated with low serotonin levels, which has been implicated in impulsivity, which, as indicated before, makes a person more prone to lie.
Pathological lying, though, can be thought of as being associated with a select few psychiatric diagnoses, which normally have their onset during adolescence. Namely, these are Conduct Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder. In conduct disorder, it is common to seelying, conning people and other forms of deceit. In Antisocial Personality Disorder, there is a pervasive pattern of disregard or the rights of others, and with this, the person with this disorder will often lie to get what they wish – usually money, sex or power.
