Final Cut Pro HD vs AVID Adrenaline

Just when I was telling my Curd Rice members about AVID Adrenaline, and when we were thinking how to get all the cash to purchase it, I have to stumble upon Final Cut Pro HD. Seeing is believing. What should I do now? With Final Cut Pro HD, Mac OS X Panther and the dual-processor Power Mac G5, Apple has redefined high-performance in a professional nonlinear editing system. Measuring Performance You can quantify performance of a professional nonlinear editing system using two metrics. A real-time effects test measures how many effects, filters and transitions you can apply to multiple simultaneous video clips and play back in real-time without additional proprietary video acceleration hardware. Render speed measures the time it takes for your Mac to composite multiple video streams with effects, filters and transitions and write the resulting video playback file to disk. Any way you measure it, Final Cut Pro HD on a Power Mac G5 offers unparalleled performance. Real-time effects with RT Extreme There are nearly 200 filters, effects, and transitions in Final Cut Pro HD, most of which can be used in real-time. Apple measured performance by counting the number of simultaneous video streams the system can composite and output in real-time without rendering. Test results show that the dual-processor 2GHz Power Mac G5 running Final Cut Pro HD and Mac OS X Panther can output seven simultaneous streams of full quality uncompressed SD video (8-bit 4:2:2) in real-time. This represents a 40% performance gain when compared to Avid Media Composer Adrenaline running on a dual 2.8GHz Xeon Windows system. AVID acquires PINNACLE

Avid Completes Acquisition of Pinnacle

Tewksbury , MA – August 9, 2005 – Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Pinnacle Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCLE). Avid will issue approximately 6.2 million shares of stock and pay approximately $71.3 million in cash to Pinnacle shareholders and option holders. As of today's market close, Pinnacle Systems shares have ceased trading and Pinnacle has been delisted from the Nasdaq market.

“The completion of this acquisition immediately strengthens Avid's ability to serve the industries that Make, Manage and Move Media,” said David Krall , Avid's president and chief executive officer. “Broadcasters who are transitioning from analog to all-digital production will now have immediate access to a wider selection of capabilities from Avid, and in the months ahead, they'll experience tighter interoperability between Pinnacle's broadcast products and Avid's end-to-end all-digital production environments. At the same time, we have formed a new Consumer division that will continue to leverage Pinnacle Systems' market-leading brand in the rapidly growing consumer video market. All told, with Pinnacle among the Avid family of companies, we've further cemented our position as a leading supplier of products and services to the world's digital media creators.”

Stale news yes. But I am still appalled by the fact. I was thinking about it because I was compelled to edit in Pinnacle today, due to unavoidable circumstances. As a true blue AVID user, I found the Pinnacle interface quite irritating Actually, I seriously can't see any implications on the above deal. Of course Pinnacle Sys is a good purchase for AVID. But I'm quite sceptical about the amount of changes that AVID can impose on Pinnacle, and even if it does, how long will it take for the changes to be in effect. I'm still wondering whether AVID will have anything new, in time to come for both its own, and Pinnacle users.

Womad

"WOMAD is back! Perhaps the closest thing we have to Woodstock-type fests, the World of Music, Arts and Dance Festival promises three evenings of exciting entertainment, with performances by over 14 artists from around the world, music and dance workshops, wellness activities, and of course lots and lots of food and drinks!

Among the notable performers - Dhol Foundation (UK/India), drummer Bill Cobham (USA), singer Sheila Majid (Malaysia), reggae DJ Apache Indian, and our very own Wicked Aura Batucada.

So gather your family and friends, get your picnic mats, and indulge in some serious world music, participate in workshops, try out holistic treatments, or just chill out under the stars!"

I just came back from this year's WOMAD, and man it was really really fun. I just loved the music and the crowd and the dance. We really enjoyed ourselves. Just when I was thinking that I didn't bring my camera, 2 gals from the WOMAD organinsing team came out of nowhere to take a shot of us, and gave us the pic instantly. That was really exciting!!!
That is my WOMAD wrist band on the right!
That's the photo taken at WOMAD. That's Dhinesh with me... I'm definitley going to the WOMAD 2006.

1 Giant Leap

"Many people love the idea of laptop recording, but few have put it into practice like 1 Giant Leap. Their acclaimed album and DVD project was recorded on an Apple Powerbook during a six-month journey round the world — with a little help from some friends..."
I loved this Album, the instant I heard it. And then I saw a programme about the 'Making of 1 Giant Leap' on Star World, and fell deeper in love with it. This is my idea of fusion music, and it features some of my favourite singers like Asha Bhosle and Robbie Williams. I bought this CD in 2003, and i still very much listen to it. The music is perfect, when you invite your friends over for a special dinner. 1 Giant Leap, will always stay with me. 3 cheers to Duncan Bridgeman & Jamie Catto.

Prithivi Raj

I was amazed when I saw this man in 'Kana Kanden'. He looked and acted the perfect gentleman, only to realise that he was the most cunning villain. An extraodinary performance, that could not have been pulled off easily by anyone. Prithvi is a Malayalam actor. Having done 12 films in his mother-tongue, 'Kana Kanden' was his first tamil movie. This man has managed to grasp the tamil audience attention, and should be here to stay...but time has to reveal the truth. News that he will be acting in the next tamil movie, by K. Bhagyaraj, as a hero. Whatever it is, I hope the producers make very good use of his smart looks, and good talent. He might be the next Prakash Raj in the making, so it is up to the Tamil Cine Industry to not lose a veteran actorto become. Good Luck Prithvi!

Pushpaka Vimanam

"a new Kamal-Singeetham experiment hits the Silver Screen, in 1988, unannounced. Everyone gasps at the intelligence of 'Pushpaka Vimanamu' (Ironically not a word is spoken). People don't know how they're supposed to react. It was made it in English ('The Love Chariot') , Kannada ('Pushpaka Vimana'), Malayalam ('Pushpaka Vimanam'), and Tamil (Pesum Padam)." There is much to be said about this film. First things first, this is a definite Kamal Satisfiyer. The plot is essentially about an unemployed graduate, and where his thirst for money brings him. A truly excellent Singeetham film, following Raja Paarvai. This can't be dismissed as a Charlie Chaplin comedy, but rather a film, where there happens to be no reason for the charachters to speak! The stroy is so well furnished, with just the right amount of perks everywhere, that you become completely nonchalent of the fact that the charachters don't utter a word. Ilayaraaja's re-recording was inevitable to bring out the best in this movie. There are no songs or whatsoever, but the feeling of suspense, comedy, and thrill were brought out by maestro's magic. Much to be learnt in this movie also. The movie leaves us with alot if things to ponder on; about the essentials in life, about the true evil, about love, and about the relationships in life. The movie, in my opinion, is one that should never be missed, and it is one that should have gained greater acclamation.

Varsham - Rain

I am well aware that the movie came out in 2003...but to me, only recently have I been tapping my feet to the song, "Nuvvostanante Nennodantana". Chitra is superb. Songs in the movie are well picturised, and the colourful settings are truly Telugu. The movie can't do without Prakash Raj. Trisha could have been given a stronger charachter. (But I liked her rain dance nevertheless) Prabhas's performance is excellent, and in my opinion he is here to stay
This is my first Telugu movie I have watched. And I loved the witty jokes, and Prabhas's acting. Then other song in the movie is a duet... "Mellaga" by SPB Charan and Sumangali. I loved this song the instant I heard it. Funny that both the songs that I like in the movie are set in the rain.
For those who have not watched Telugu movies at all..start here... instead of watching the next new Chiranjeevi flick, or Jr. NTR flick. Seriously.
